Polyus has issued the first 2.2 mln carbon units in the Russian registry

Polyus PJSC has successfully completed the validation of the results for stage 1 of its climate project implemented at the Olimpiada and Blagodatnoye deposits in Krasnoyarsk Territory. As part of Polyus’ first climate project, 2,156,797 carbon units were listed on Russia’s National Registry operated by Kontur JSC. This is equal to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the reconnection of some consumers at Olimpiada and Blagodatnoye that used coal and petroleum fuel to less carbon-intensive electrical grid power supply.

The results of stage 1 of the climate project were confirmed by the Innovation Technology Center of Bauman Moscow State Technical University, a national authority on greenhouse gas emission validation and verification.

The verification documents regarding Polyus’ climate project are available on the carbon unit registry website in accordance with Russian Government Resolution #248 dated 11 May 2022 (as amended on 01 June 2024).

The project is designed to be implemented over a 10-year period from 2018 to 2028. About 2 mln carbon units are expected to be issued by 2028 — the milestone for stage 2 of the climate project.

Daria Grigoreva, Sustainability Lead at Polyus PJSC, commented:

“Polyus’ first climate project is a step on the path to achieving the goals of the Climate Strategy to reduce the carbon footprint. Once the project is complete, the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is expected to exceed 4 mln tonnes of СО2-e. So far, we have already issued half of the volume, which is significant progress. This will make it possible for our Company to become a major participant in the Russian carbon market and top three leader in terms of issued carbon units.”
