Polyus partners with UN Global Compact Network in Russia to launch human rights project

n December, the UN Global Compact Network in Russia announced the launch of its first project titled, «Business and Human Rights: Implementing the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights in Strategies and Practice for Russian Companies». Polyus has partnered with the Network along with other leading Russian companies and regulatory authorities to help to implement the project.

The project aims to study the degree and specifics of the involvement of Russian business in promoting the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. This will help to determine Russian businesses’ requirements and priorities in terms of human rights, therefore broadening the levels of expertise and opportunities. An analytics database will then be compiled for Russian companies to use, as well as developing a consolidated position by uniting stakeholders and forming the basis for a discussion on next steps.

The corporate assessment will cover over 150 companies in more than 30 Russian regions. The project’s findings will be able to be used to compile reference materials for Russia’s Government, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United Nations in Russia and by other global bodies. The results will be presented in a series of discussions and expert sessions. The study will also serve as the basis for further monitoring of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights implementation in Russia.

Logistically, the project will consist of the following components: corporate research, legal expertise, public and expert consultations, analysis, case studies, media support, methodological recommendations and, finally, collating a report on findings.

The results of the study will be presented in 2023.
