Polyus is taking part in the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28). This global event held in Dubai has brought together everyone who is shaping the international climate agenda.
Daria Grigoreva, Sustainability Lead, spoke at the panel The World through the Future Lens: Biodiversity Conservation and Ecosystem Restoration, which was held at the Russian pavilion and supported by the National Network of the UN Global Compact.
Daria noted that all the company’s business units monitor the flora and fauna on their production sites and nearby. In addition, the company follows two tracks in its activities related to protecting species. First, it compensates for the environmental impact from mining, in particular by releasing young fish into water bodies and planting trees for reforestation. Second, the company works with nature reserves to assist in the study and conservation of rare species. These include wild ungulates and rare birds in the Vitim Nature Reserve in Irkutsk Region, lynx in the Krasnoyarsk Pillars National Park and rare birds on Talan Island in the Sea of Okhotsk and Sunnagino-Siglinsky Nature Reserve in Yakutia. All these projects are included in Polyus’ conservation area program.
"Biodiversity conservation is the most important challenge facing humanity after climate change. They are both closely connected because warming leads to the extinction of species. Meanwhile, the conservation of biodiversity and natural ecosystems could be a tool in combating climate change, as they are natural carbon sinks and stores," said Grigoreva.
