Certification Is a Complex Contribution to Sustainability – Interview with Polyus’ Head of HSE and Sustainable Development

Polyus Verninskoye was named leader for ‘Occupational Health and Safety’ in the Leaders of Russian Business: Dynamics and Responsibility National award 2018.

The contest was organized by the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP). The panel of judges assessed the nominees based on 16 criteria, including investing in Health & Safety and initiatives aimed at improving working conditions; the business community’s awareness of these initiatives and their implementation; reducing injury rates in the workplace; developing corporate programs aimed at improving employee health; and promoting a healthy lifestyle among employees, etc.

Polyus Verninskoye beat its peers in all of these categories and was ranked first in the Achievements in Occupational Health and Safety category. The award was presented by Alexander Shokhin, President of the RSPP.

Roman Dertinov, HSE&SD Director, Polyus HQ, commented:

“I would like to congratulate the employees of Polyus Verninskoye and the entire Polyus Group. Verninskoye’s recipe for success is simple — it’s just a few components working in harmony. First — a team of over 1,000 change leaders driving it forward. Second — our Managing Director, the true leader. Third — the Management Company, a team of experienced methodologists who have implemented the successful High Five! campaign, employed advanced techniques like the Bradley Curve to improve safety culture, and done so much more.”

Igor Tsukurov, Managing Director, Polyus Verninskoye, said:

“Our victory is entirely down to our hard work during 2018. Over the whole year, we maintained a zero injury rate thanks to a number of measures that we have introduced to ensure safe working conditions, upgrade our production, and increase workplace automation. One of our key initiatives in 2018 was the ongoing development of a safety culture. Polyus Verninskoye’s safety rules apply to all employees and management, without exception. This means that any employee has the right to raise concerns regarding the unsafe behaviour of any one of their colleagues. This kind of feedback is welcomed across the board, as indicative of a common concern for the health and safety of all Polyus colleagues.”
