Polyus joins RAEX webinar on climate risk management

Polyus joins RAEX webinar on climate risk management

On 17 November 2021, Alex Čaičics, Group Head of ESG Communications at Polyus, took part in a webinar organised by RAEX, Russia’s leading credit rating agency. He was joined by International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) manager Verónica Martínez.

The panellists discussed risk management in mining as part of the climate change agenda.

In her presentation Verónica commented that climate change is one of the key global challenges of our time and that building resilience today means reaping rewards tomorrow. She said that ICMM members commit to being part of the solution to climate change by implementing adaption and mitigation solutions at an operational level, and by continuing to contribute to the sustainable production of commodities that are essential to the energy transition.

During his presentation, Alex discussed the importance of the ICMM’s aim to achieve zero emissions by 2050. He also described Polyus’ approach towards climate risk management, an integral part of the corporate governance system at Polyus. Polyus’ approach includes:

  • Identification of scenarios and significant climate risks
  • Determination of key parameters for a qualitative risk assessment
  • Data collection
  • Risk mapping
  • Qualitative and quantitative risk assessment and scenario analysis
  • Development of tools for risk management and disclosure of information on

TCFD

The ICMM brings together 28 mining and metals company members across the globe. In October its members including Polyus committed to a goal of net zero Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 or sooner. Polyus is the only Russian member of the ICMM.
